In the current context of urban protection and renewal in our country, which has gradually shifted from a past passive form of "rescue protection" to an active preventive form of "systematic protection" that emphasizes the overall continuity of historical spatial patterns, a deep analysis of the spatial patterns of traditional settlements, rivers, and cities has become a core issue in the wisdom inheritance of regional construction. This study, based on the theory of spatial genes, uses 37 historical towns in the Yuan River Basin of Hunan as samples. By establishing a multifactor database of river, mountain, and urban spaces and utilizing GIS for historical map translation, the research conducts a visual analysis of the data to reveal the principles of natural, spatial, and cultural synergy and to extract spatial genes. The findings indicate that within the spatial pattern of river-mountain cities, towns generally rely on water and mountains, forming diverse hydrological adaptation patterns and mountain-enclosed configurations, with the spatial form presenting a differentiated expression that is organically symbiotic with the topography. Based on the identification of the spatial genes of river-mountain cities, this study analyzes its formation mechanism from the perspectives of natural selection, cultural adaptation, and cultural identity, revealing the essence of the construction philosophy of ’seeking benefits and avoiding harm, determining shape by function, and the mutual generation of form and meaning,’ which provides historical experience support for the inheritance and continuation of the spatial characteristics of contemporary waterfront historical towns.
