Perception of safety is crucial for mental health, walking behavior, and travel decision-making, and nighttime safety has become a core requirement for urban vibrancy and street walkability. This study employed the stated preference method to investigate the environmental preferences of nighttime pedestrians, constructing a discrete choice model to quantify the key street environment factors influencing perceived safety and their underlying mechanisms. The findings reveal that key factors significantly impacting nighttime walking safety include security kiosks, street interface types, sidewalk width, lighting brightness, pedestrian-vehicle separation facilities, traffic volume, and street scale. Using the Suzhou Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation Zone as a case study, the authors evaluate the current conditions of street segments based on a safety perception utility index and propose targeted optimization strategies. This research offers an innovative behavioral perspective for improving the pedestrian environment.
