China has undergone profound structural transformations, among which urbanization stands out as the most significant. In the era of urban China, a phenomenon of "midlife loneliness" has begun to spread. Middle-aged groups living in large cities face structural pressures in areas such as childcare, elderly care, career, marriage, social interaction, and health, which gradually translate into a perceived sense of "midlife loneliness." Research finds that midlife loneliness is rooted in the intersection of urbanity, involution, and individualization: manifested in a lack of collegial trust in the workplace, marital slackness, shrinking social networks, reduced intergenerational communication, mental exhaustion, and increased physical and psychological stress. The deep proliferation of midlife loneliness can trigger multiple social consequences, such as midlife depression, exacerbation of midlife crises, and even alarming cases of premature death among middle-aged individuals. Accordingly, this paper proposes a path toward building midlife-friendly cities, advocating for a systematic alleviation mechanism from four dimensions—institutional safeguards, environmental optimization, social atmosphere, and mental health—and calls for integrating the physical and mental well-being of middle-aged populations into the policy framework of high-quality urban development and "investing in people," thereby offering a new governance perspective for addressing the structural predicaments of urban society.
